Kathy (my wife) arrived Friday night, about an hour later than expected, and on Air Canada instead of United (so I had to fetch her at the domestic terminal instead of international). Oh, that's Queen Vicky (the holiday is Queen Victoria Day) there at top-right, not Queen Kathy. Kathy's had a bit of a run-in with Chicago's weather (thunderstorms), and ended up routed through Toronto to get from New Hampshire to British Columbia. All in all not a big deal. I'd laid out several things that we might do together during her visit; we actually did very few of them. That's fine; it was nonetheless wonderful to be together again. We're both quite independent people, so we're pretty accustomed to being apart (especially since I had such a high amount of travel during our early years together) -- sometimes its just nice to be close to one another... and do nothing. However, there were a few things that just "needed to be done". We had to make a batch of Kathy's Kick-Ass-Mai-Tai; we had to drink them (what a hangover). I cooked a few dishes for her in my postage-stamp kitchen: her favorite steak with green peppercorn poivrade; an impromptu beef chuck roast. We sat on our little porch, took in some BC wine, olive tapenade and some good, stinky cheese (gorgonzola). Home is where you hang your cheese. Or something like that. I took her to some of the spots that I'd enjoyed so much on my own -- and we found a few of our own. For example, we went out to UBC just to "see what we could see" -- and ended up at Wreck Beach -- the local nudist "hangout". I'd like to say that we were shocked, just shocked -- but we don't shock easily these days. Besides, Scott's no stranger to being nekkid in the Great Outdoors -- although after a bout with a deadly form of skin cancer... is a lot more careful about it. I'd read about Wreck -- knew it was in Vancouver somewhere -- but had no idea it was at the edge of UBC. We never had nude beaches when I was going to University. Besides -- what would we have done with our slide rules and pocket protectors? A high point for both of us was when Kathy came to my school and hung out ("observed") for an afternoon. She saw the whole shootin' match -- our demos, practice, tension... and the food was good too. Next LogPrevious Log |
