At
first glance, the term "group worthy" might
see, well, off-putting; exclusionary. In fact, the term popped up more
or less spontaneously as part of the informal way that new folks have
becoming incorporated into an increasingly-wide circle of friends. I (Scott
Blessley, webmaster for this site) became one of those friends in the
mid-1990s. As time went on the core group of about 4 people has grown
to over 20. And if you're reading this now (wait, you are reading
this now) -- you're probably "groupworthy", too. Courteous
diver? Considerate of others? Love diving? Got a free week (usually in
September)? You don't need to be an experienced diver -- just an
enthusiastic one.
Originally it was simply a gathering of a few friends, sharing a dive boat with whoever else happened to sign up. As the group grew, we were able to charter an entire boat, using a "member's" travel agency to receive the travel industry perqs -- typically a couple of free berths, and a commission rebate which is applied as a discount, uniformly to everyone. It is a bit of work, and hard having to ask friends to get their payments in (What am I, a Collection Agency?) -- but it's worth it.
We've started a page for the ever-expanding members of our group. It's still being built -- but you can check it out here.
